The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
